Artist Description:
A bit of context:
I grew up and went to college in Harlem. I was introduced to the blues, jazz and r&b early on, have listened to and loved the blues ever since. In 1980, I began hosting a weekly blues show on North Country Public Radio. Unlikely locale for a blues show, you say? Indeed. Even more unlikely, the emergence of a top shelf, St. Lawrence County-based blues trio, The Don Washington Blues Band. These guys could go head to head with the best of Chicago, New Orleans or Memphis and hold their own. Led by the extraordinarily talented Don Washington, the sound is very together, very tight, very clear. Let me put it another way: you know how you only need to hear a bar or two of
Muddy Waters or Bessie Smith or Robert Johnson or Bonnie Raitt to immediately know who you're listening to? It's the sound of a distinct voice, a distinct musicality. Don Washington, Larry Bacura and Joel Hurd have that kind of blues personality. No kidding. Amazing, ain't it, here on the borderland north of the Adirondacks?
The playing is professional, the commitment is palpable, and you'll hear
the heart as soon as you slide this disc into the cd player. I'm proud
to know this band. I'm honored to recommend their music to you.
